Palmistry
Palmistry is the study of the hand.
It is divided into Cheirognomy and Cheiromancy. The former deals with the shape of the hand and fingers in relation to the hereditary influence of character and disposition. The latter with the lines and marking of the palm in relation to the events of past, present, and future.
History
Five thousand years ago, palmistry was practised in China. Literature on palmistry can be traced back to two to three thousand years ago. Such scholars as Aristotle and Albertus Magnus wrote books on palmistry. In 1853, British scholar Mesinar proved that certain atoms or electrons move in tandem with lines of a hand. Palmistry reached its peak in the 19th century where some finest books on palm-reading were printed, like “The Book of the Hand” by William G Benham.

Masters
WONG, CHUN FU
A fortune-telling master who has stalls at Wong Tai Sin Temple and Temple Street. Master Wong has been interviewed by CNN, RTHK and NY Times and written several books on fortune-telling.
YAU, CHI WAI
A fortune-telling master based in Monk Kok. Master Yau works as a consultant for different companies and also gives lessons at Monk Kok.
Heritage
It takes more than passion to be a fortune-teller, you have to love it, to feel responsible for inheriting it.
Inspired by his mother, Wong is interested in fortune-telling since he was a kid. He was then devoted to learning fortune-telling. He read books and learnt from more than 20 masters. At that time, he inspired some of his family members to dabble into fortune-telling.
Some Masters say that the advance in technology discourages people to become fortune-tellers. Online prayer service has been launched since 2008, through which people may practise the Chinese tradition of prayer via the internet. Also, a large number of fortune-telling applications are released as substitutes for fortune-telling masters.
To Master Wong and Master Yau, it is always better to be adapted to the situation than to resist it. They make use of such smartphone applications as Whatsapp, Wechat and Facebook Message to promote their business at home and overseas.
